Foundation Hamelhuys is the Centre for living with and after cancer in Groningen. (Ex-)cancer patients and their loved ones can drop by free of charge without an appointment for a cup of coffee, a chat, a listening ear and activities that promote well-being.
The centre is partly run by (trained) volunteers. Some volunteers are ex-patients or have experienced the disease at close quarters. But this is not necessary. Activities, workshops and lectures are held as needed. What matters most is contact between fellow sufferers. Talking together, having a drink, taking part in an activity or just being there for each other.
Our hosts are trained in communication and interview techniques. Hostesses and hosts work according to a flexible schedule, receiving guests, providing coffee and tea, looking at the guest's needs and informing about possibilities and activities. In addition, they do most common household or facility work. Hostesses/hostesses are also asked to occasionally help with activities during the evening or at weekends, if their personal situation allows.
