It is very nice to make a contribution to the language development of a 6-year-old girl: by doing so, you increase the opportunities available to this child. Language is the bridge to the future.
Job tasks and duties
You will visit the family for an hour every week. One of the parents attends the reading hour. You talk to the 6-year-old girl about her interests and what she has experienced. Then you read (picture) books together and talk about the book. Make a drawing or a song, for example (if that catches on and suits you) and do (language) games. Actually, everything is language. It is very much about language fun. Our experience is that this hour a week can make a world of difference. At home, parents speak a different language and cannot help with Dutch.
Minimum education level: hbo/wo
Job skills and qualities
You speak and can read Dutch yourself and you are interested in children and their language development. And of course it is nice if you like reading yourself. It is also nice if you are interested in other cultures. Furthermore, it is important that you communicate with us about how things are going or what you encounter. We would very much like you to commit yourself to this family for a longer period of time. Preferably about a (school) year but at least six months. Preferably you are a woman.
Extra information
We have yet to make contact with this family ourselves, but wanted to use the opportunity that you might think about volunteering during the Christmas holidays to possibly get in touch with you. One of our volunteer coordinators will meet you and the family and see if there is a click, or if another family would be a better fit. You will then get to know the family together. You keep this coordinator informed and he or she remains involved in the background. We offer you an introductory meeting for reading aloud with other started reading aloud volunteers and various online training courses, as well as substantive and informal meetings where you meet other reading aloud volunteers and receive information.
