9-year-old boy seeks active and patient buddy

Urgent
Humanitas • job opening nr. 14201

Interesting about this job

This particular appeal is for a 9-year-old boy with autism and developmental delays. Mother would like to be relieved on Thursday afternoons when his little brother goes to day care. Someone who can teach him to ride a special (heavy) tricycle and/or go for walks with him. Someone available on a long-term basis, due to his difficulty with change. Sweet, cheerful boy who likes to be outside.

This call is posted from the Beautiful Afternoon Buddies project, a buddy project for children and young people aged between 4 and 18. Many children are less likely to participate in society for various reasons; due to disability, poverty, loneliness or other reasons. For them, it is nice to regularly get all the attention they need and gain new experiences. Their world is expanded. It also gives the parents a helping hand and relieves them of some of the burden. We ask for at least six months' availability, as it takes time to build up a trusting relationship with a child and almost all children need long-term buddy contact.

Job tasks and duties

The demand is mainly to get out and about with a child; think going to the park together, to a museum, cinema, petting zoo, doing crafts at home, reading, watching films, cooking and baking together. The project is all about providing personal attention and engaging in fun activities, which can make a big difference to the children. One volunteer says: "What is natural for me can be very special for someone else. It gives me a nice feeling to see that my buddy is enjoying himself so much and can really be a child for a while."
