Staff self-harvesting garden

Stichting De Blije Bodem • job opening nr. 13872

Interesting about this job

At De Blije Bodem, we offer a volunteer spot with broad possibilities: as a young project, we are still fully under construction in setting up the regenerative self-harvesting garden. At a cycling quarter from the centre of Groningen, we are trying to transform a badly damaged piece of land into a green oasis that everyone can come and enjoy. We grow vegetables, herbs and flowers, but are also creating seating areas and other structures. This allows you, as a volunteer, to help with both the physical construction of the garden, as well as taking care of the plants with the gardener. We like it if you want to put up or create something in the garden with your own idea.

One of our goals is to create an educational garden; so with us there is always something to learn. Not just from us, we like to learn from you too!

The garden is set up as a public regenerative self-harvesting garden. Regenerative, in short, means that we want to invite a piece of land with little (soil) life to flourish again, creating a green oasis in the city. The public and self-harvesting part of our garden ensures that during your work, in addition to interacting with our team, you will also come into contact with the garden's wide range of participants and visitors.

Job tasks and duties

  • Help with the construction and maintenance of the garden.
  • Building with wood or other natural materials (bridges, tables, benches etc), new cultivation beds, building paths, mowing, making arches or other creative forms. We work mainly with reused sustainable materials.
  • You can also help the gardener with plant care and everything around it.

We are also open to a more administrative slant: do you enjoy writing texts for posts on social media? Or do you enjoy helping with grant and fund writing? Then too, you are most welcome to join us.

Job skills and qualities

We are not looking for specific skills and qualities. We are open to anyone who likes to come and contribute. However, it is nice if, after some explanation, you can work largely independently. Most projects are done in groups. The size of the group can vary between 2 or >15 people.

Extra information

It is nice for us if we can make an appointment for you to come and volunteer at least 1 half-day a week. This appointment is non-binding but we do ask you to let us know as far in advance as possible if you cannot come. Your coming will be taken into account in the planning and in some cases the work will be adapted to your coming.

We have a volunteer app group that you can join if you wish. We also share a weekly sign-up schedule with each other to see who will be in the garden when.
