You look after the interests of a client who is unable to do so themselves or has no one in their network to look after them. It is a responsible volunteer position in which you build up a relationship of trust with the client and defend his/her interests. You will receive a basic Mentoring course, support and training. A mentor fulfils a responsible, meaningful and enjoyable role for vulnerable people in our society.
Job tasks and duties
Mentoring is a legal measure for people who can partially or no longer manage their personal interests. This measure can be granted for various reasons, for example if there is a mental disability, non-congenital brain injury, dementia or psychological problems.
Stichting Mentorschap Noord is looking for volunteers who want to be mentors in the province of Groningen for people who are unable to look after their own interests in the field of welfare and care. In addition to a mentor, the clients often also has an administrator, who looks after the finances.
The activities of a mentor are:
- Please visit the client once or twice a month.
- Keep a log of contacts around the client.
- Be the point of contact for care and assistance.
- Monitoring the interests of the client.
- Representing the clients in discussions.
- Consult with the administrator, advise and make decisions and write an annual report for the court.
- The time investment is about 10 hours per month.
Minimum education level: mbo
Job skills and qualities
We are looking for volunteers with good social and communication skills. You also have affinity with the target group, some life experience and knowledge of the social map. You are respectful towards the client and know how to handle confidential information. Furthermore, you show initiative, have the ability to decide and act, set boundaries and work well together. You have a good command of the Dutch language, both verbally and in writing, and can submit a Certificate of Good Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag, VOG).
Extra information
The link between mentor and client is carefully established under the guidance of coordinators.
After the official mentoring decision of the Court by the subdistrict judge, you are mandated by St. Mentorschap Noord (Legal Person) as a mentor with which you are then the legal representative of the client when it comes to his or her care, nursing, treatment or guidance. Mentors receive a travel allowance.
