Interesting about this job
You get to deal with an interesting target group for whom you can mean a lot. For sex offenders, it is enormously motivating that you volunteer to help them reintegrate into society. In addition, you will have a lot of contact with other volunteers, you follow a volunteer training course at the start, there are quarterly theme meetings together with other volunteers and, of course, a Christmas drink!
Job tasks and duties
- Providing practical support and maintaining social contacts with sex offenders during their return to society. In practical terms, this could mean having a cup of coffee with the person regularly, together with 3 other volunteers, and having a good conversation, going along with applying for benefits if the person finds it difficult to do so themselves, but you could also decide together to go cycling, hiking or other activities that the offender and the volunteers enjoy doing.
- Signals of recidivism risk are noticed and discussed with the offender and the circle coordinator.
- Cooperate within the circle with other stakeholders such as family, the probation service, the neighbourhood police, the treatment officer and other professionals who may be involved with a sex offender.
Job skills and qualities
As a volunteer, you do not need to have a specific educational background.
Everyone is welcome.
Because you will be working with other volunteers, it is important that you can work with others, have communication skills and a respectful, non-judgemental attitude.
Extra information
We start with an introductory meeting where you can ask your questions and we can explain what the project entails.
After that, if you are still enthusiastic, you will follow a two-day volunteer training. During this training, we provide information about the project, but we also invite a practitioner to tell something about the target group. In addition, an experienced volunteer comes along to tell what it is like to be a COSA volunteer. If you actually become a COSA volunteer, you will receive support through coaching by a circle coordinator and quarterly theme meetings.
